But as I was reading it, something bothered me a little. The headlines all say “pets” but the actual animals listed were chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and horses.
So I had a thought, and tracked down the untranslated Facebook post.
The word that all the English news sources, AND the automatic Facebook translation, were translating as “pets” is “husdyr”
And I don’t speak Danish, but I had a suspicion. Because while rabbit and guinea pigs are often kept as pets…chickens and horses are not, right? So. I check.
I don’t think Danish really distinguishes between domestic animal, livestock, and pets linguistically. And I think all those news sources just went with the Facebook automatic translation without questioning it.
Livestock. The zoo is asking for livestock donations. Rabbits, chickens, and guinea pigs are often raised for meat. They aren’t asking for puppies.
the english headllines also make it sound like the zoo wants people to send living pets, but I’d wager a guess that the animals being donated are probably dead on arrival? idk how it works though, maybe they do want living donations so they can have the freshest meat by slaughtering it on site, but yeah they are not asking for like, beloved house cats and old dogs or boxes of unexpected kittens and puppies that can’t find homes. it’s just sensible for zoos to receive donated meat for their predators. this is a perfectly normal and very very poorly translated situation.
The original post specifies that they are accepting animals that are *going* to be euthanized, and are offering to do so for free, humanely and safely.
Which is a very useful service for a lot of small livestock owners, for whom humanely euthanizing and ethically dealing with the body can be expensive and complicated. (A horse is a big animal, after all. Culling male roosters from an egg laying flock can be unpleasant, etc.)
An additional thought, which I think many of us overlook when that initial Big Emotion hits is that there isn’t one simple “good” way to deal with a body after death. Cultural norms place big emotions on this, especially if we view the animal in question as a companion animal instead of food, but like…a rabbit isnt going to be denied eternal paradise after the Rapture if its cremated. Or Eaten. And it’s perhaps better to consider the quality of life the animal had, how painless its death, and the sustainability of our husbandry, rather than being overly concerned with what happens to the body of the animal after it dies.
Can I just say something honestly and very seriously to all you writers?
With the Internet going down the “nothing adult, no death, no nothing. Make it kid friendly” route,
Please don’t ever stop making art or writing wips that are gruesome, horror, other things like that. Don’t let the Internet sanitize how you wanna tell a story. Channel your rage into your art and keep going and don’t give up
10000% this. And if I might add a corollary for readers: Step up and support authors making gruesome, horrifying, edgy, angry art. Read confidently; practice resilience with slightly uncomfortable topics so you can deprogram whatever cringing flinch response the purity-culture Internet has tried to impose on you. If you hear about some “scandalous” book that is “too problematic” for anyone to be allowed to read it, go read it on purpose just to see what all the fuss is about. Put edgy, difficult, bold books on your rec lists, praise them BECAUSE they’re edgy and angry and bold, talk about those “dark” aspects that you love… And, crucially, find ways to do so without an apologetic disclaimer for the material the book contains.
Personally, I wish we could transition to saying something like “Contains depictions of {XYZ}” rather than “Content warning: {XYZ}” because the former is more neutral – less of a value judgment. The latter, by use of the word “warning”, quietly reinforces an idea (eagerly co-opted by the worst purity-culture antis and Christian fascists) that it is Wrong to write about those things, and that therefore the work is somehow Dangerous to the entiregeneral public, even people who are not carrying {XYZ}-related trauma.
We HAVE to push back on the idea that serious topics make a piece of fiction inherently harmful, “sinful”, or morally suspect – and readers have to be as much a part of this conversation as authors are.
“chat is a pronoun” has officially joined my list of internet linguistics pet peeves. “emojis are hieroglyphs” is welcoming them to the club.

would y'all please stop playing “vibes are legitimate intellectual frameworks uwu” in my fucking notes.
Broke: the moon isn’t a star
Woke: it is and I love it for that and astronomy doesn’t necessarily have to be rigid uwu
Wait but chat is a pronoun isn’t it? You get over here: chat get over here. Is that not how you guys are using it?
sitting in the same syntactic slot that a pronoun can occupy does not a pronoun make
to reiterate: chat is a noun being used as a collective term of address, like “guys.” the reason “you” can fill the same spot is because “you” is, in fact, a pronoun, meaning that it can replace a noun.
Today I was listening to Jane Goodall being interviewed and she said something I knew about but had forgotten. The whole reason she went off to Africa to study chimps in the wild was because she was madly in love with Tarzan. Huge fangirl!
“He married the wrong Jane!” she laughed.
But she was so caught up in the romance of it all that she literally went off to live with chimps at a time when field studies of wild animals simply did not exist, and women were not taken very seriously as scientists. And basically invented a whole approach to studying wild animals that is standard today, changed everything we know about chimps, and became one of nature’s biggest champions.
Because she loved real animals and one fictional man.
When Mussolini created fascism, it was designed to be the merging of corporate and government power into an authoritarian regime. While labor unions were OSTENSIBLY independent, the regime was actually hostile to any union not controlled by or directly serving the regime. (Much like the US regime is hostile to most unions other than, say, police unions.)
This is why US politicians don’t like you learning what fascism is–because everyone who studied the rise of fascism in the early twentieth century could see exactly what course the US has been on for several decades now.
One of the most blatant advances of fascism in the US (although not the only one) was the passage Citizens United into law, which allows corporations to make unlimited political contributions. The Republicans who introduced and supported the bill insisted that “corporations ARE people,” that “money IS speech,” and claimed that not passing it would have “a chilling effect on free speech.” (Those are actual quotations.)
i was gonna say “wow, they’re really pushing the came back wrong trope because buffy keeps repeating the exact phrase” until i googled and realise the phrase “came back wrong” literally originates from buffy. this show is like the modern shakespeare
in 2004 a thread started on buffistas.org to discuss tropes used in Buffy and other Whedonverse shows. At the time there were no formal names for most tropes so users assigned them names based on the scenes they were discussing. This thread inspired one of the site members to start the website TVTropes.org
Most of the listings on TVtropes were named after scenes and quotes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I do often think about how the origin of “he would not fucking say that” was in reference to a post which depicted Cartman SouthPark responding politely when asked for his pronouns
meme phrases are so mobile and versatile and that’s really really beautiful but i’m always thinking about the first “she x on my y til i z” being “she ebbin on my neezer til i scrooge” and the first “fork found in kitchen” coming from a tweet about sehun from exo being spotted at a gay bar. like sometimes you just utterly nail it the very first time and no variation of the joke is going to be better.
I’m so tired of hot actors with no actual talent or magnetism. we need more ugly little cuntservers giving performances that fuck so hard you leave the theatre with road rash. willem dafoe if you’re out there
When I finally caught up with that primary school friend I just mentioned she off-handedly talked about how the popular girls in our class didn’t get why she was always hanging out with me instead of showing up to the parties she (unlike me) apparently did get invited to. “Well why did you choose me over them?” I asked, honestly perplexed by this discovery. “The thing is,” she said. “These other girls didn’t do jack shit but gossip and talk shit about each other. And that was so boring. You didn’t talk shit about anyone. You wanted to do actual fun things like play The Sims 3 and play with Littlest Pet Shops and draw comics and play goSupermodel and make up stories. That was much more fun. You were fun.” And I honestly think hearing that healed something in me.
Can we just say abuser again. “Narcissist” this “narc abuse” that, and then 90% of the time people just describe regular abuser behavior.
“It’s a classic tactic for narcissists to take away something you care about and then give it back and expect gratitude” you mean it’s a classic tactic for abusers. That is not some special strategy that only narcissists use, it’s literally just manipulation. Manipulation is a classic abusive behavior.
I am begging people to understand that abuse is a pattern of behaviors that anyone can fall into, not some special separate group that you can neatly label and separate yourself from.
idk it really bothers me when people make fun of women and try to justify it by saying White Women or Straight Women or Cis Women or whatever because 85% of the time theyre not criticizing white supremacy or heterosexuality or anything to do with harmful gender stereotypes, they’re just making fun of women who Happen to belong to a specific group & are trying to justify their misogyny (intentionally or not) by slapping CISHET onto it
